1969, A YEAR OF FACTORY MUSCLE AND MOPAR'S A12.......

Bombing Cambodia, the Que Son Valley raged on. Protesters marched on everything. Civil rights lost Martin Luther King a year earlier, the aftermath of rioting smoldered. The backdrop to all this included mind expanding drugs, which were gaining in popularity almost as fast as sexual permissiveness. Both followed the unstoppable beat of now historic music.

The 'generation gap' provided an indication of how fast society was changing. But not fast enough as 'revolution' was the buzz of the day . It was a time of incredible cultural upheaval fueled by continuously incredible current events.

It's no mistake Mopar's A12, a most radical factory muscle effort, was born that year- a true reflection of those times.

As NASA was claiming the bright July moon, A12s were claiming the hot summer streets.....

***

Remembering '69....

In early January Namath guaranteed the upstart AFL Jets would beat the Colts in Superbowl III, and delivered-- the same day Led Zeppelin released their first album. The A12 plan is moving from bar napkin to project development in the boardrooms at Mopar.

On January 30 the Beatles gave their last public performance, unannounced, on the roof at Apple Records. A month later Mickey Mantle announces retirement-- a few days later Jim Morrison is arrested in Miami for indecent exposure...and in early to mid March the first A12 rolls off the production line at Lynch Road.

On March 10 th James Earl Ray pleads guilty to killing Rev. Martin Luther King. 2 weeks later John and Yoko are married. 3 days later 'D-Day' General Dwight Eisenhower dies, and on March 31 Ronnie Sox shifts an A12 into the 12s at Cecil County.

1 week later Harvard is seized and taken over by 300 students. May 10th brings the fierce battle at 'Hamburger Hill' in Nam-- 10 days later National Guard helicopters spray bomb anti war protestors, A week later 'Give Peace a Chance' is released. In early June the car you see in this photo album rolls off the production line at Lynch Road

On June 8th the politically controversial Smothers Brothers Show is cancelled-- a week after that Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones dies under 'mysterious circumstances'. In early (to mid?) July the last A12 rolls off the assembly line, and a few weeks later 'Easy Rider' hits the movie theaters and drive ins.

July 18th, Ted Kennedy drives off a bridge at Chappaquiddick killing his young female companion. 2 days later Neil Armstrong takes one small step, which knocks Kennedy off the front page. On hot summer streets throughout America A12s take giant leaps.

August 9th comes and the Charles Manson Cult goes on a killing spree in Los Angeles. Actress Sharon Tate is among the dead. Five days after that 500,000 attend Woodstock (many of the songs on this soundtrack come from Woodstock)-- Two days later Hurricane Camille slams into Mississippi (there were 12 hurricanes that year). A week after that the My Lai military trial begins. At Mopar the radical 69 Daytona is now out of the wind tunnel and onto the proving grounds...already pushing 190mph!

On September 26 the final Beatle album, Abbey Road, is released. No one could understand why the Beatles were breaking up. 3 weeks later 250,000 walk on Washington DC in protest of the war, the next day the Miracle Mets, who finished in 9th place in the NL the year before win the World Series.

...and on and on.....the beat went on. What a year!....
